Language Arts: Our basal story this week is a play called Smile, Mike! We will have an assessment on Friday. The skills we will be focusing on this week are: long i sound spelled i consonant bossy, but silent e; is and are; asking questions while reading and making predictions for better comprehension. We will continue to work on writing descriptive sentences. Our January writing project will focus on writing a story about an imaginary snowman/snowgirl that comes to life. We will also be beginning our published books. Students will need to write 3-5 sentences about themselves for each letter of the alphabet. This will be part of their homework for January and February. More information will be coming.
Math: We are continuing with Unit 4 in math. I have sent home the Homelinks for this unit. Remember Homelinks will be assigned as we go through the unit. They do not need to be returned to school. Christmas Gifts for Parents: Please make arrangements to come in sometime next week to pick up the gift your child made for you for Christmas. They are very fragile and cannot be transported on the bus. Perhaps, you can make arrangements with someone you know in the neighborhood to pick yours up. Again.... they are very fragile. They need to be handled with care during transport and being placed beneath the tree. No peeking! Don't open until Christmas. Also.... A huge thank you to Anne's Hallmark in Granger. The store was kind and generous enough to donate the 22 handled bags to put the presents in.

Northpoint Elementary School
2008 Holiday Service Project
Northpoint Elementary School will be participating in a holiday service project that will benefit families in the Penn-Harris-Madison community. Each classroom will be sponsoring a family for Christmas by providing new toys, clothing, socks/underwear, coats/outerwear, gift wrap/supplies and other items to help those who are not in a position to provide these items for their children.
Your child’s teacher will share specific information with you regarding the children’s sizes, ages and interests. We are hoping to collect wrapping supplies, which will allow the children’s parents to wrap the gifts.
We are also accepting clean, gently used clothing, coats/outerwear, and boots to donate to schools that have children in need. The schools could also use gently used games for indoor recess and after school activities, so if you have anything no longer being used, please send the items our way. Please label the gently used items as “school donations” so we can separate them from the gifts.
We will be collecting items from December 1-12. The response to the food drive for Thanksgiving was overwhelmingly positive. We really appreciate the giving attitude of our families and staff!

Homework is to read, read, read! We will be working on writing coin totals using cent and dollar notation. Example: $1. 04 and 104 . Don't forget tomorrow is PHM Night for Notre Dame Women's Basketball. Be there!

Adopted Family - We had a beautiful basket of goodies/gift cards to ensure that the receiving family will have a wonderful holiday dinner. Thanks to all of you for your caring and sharing to help those less fortunate!
Jessica from St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management visited and talked to our class about the importance of recycling. She also informed us of the harmful effects of microwaving in disposal plastic containers. Each first grade student at Northpoint was registered in their contest for a chance to win a bicycle or an MP3 player. If your child is a winner, they will be notified by December 1st.

We will be focusing on beginning blends such as bl, cl, fl, pl, sl, gl; visualizing, retelling, sequencing, proper nouns (specifically days, months, holidays), and sight words: today, way, school, late, away, why. Our writing this week will focus on story writing about our families.
Math: Our math time was disrupted this week due to the election and other activities. Please check the daily schedule to see what we are studying according to the Homelink assigned. We will be focusing most of the week on Frames and Arrows and What's My Rule. We will also work on counting dimes. If your child needs extra help, let me know and I can give you several good websites or paper/pencil practice sheets. We will tentatively have a test over Unit 3 on the 18th.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Donati and Mrs. Corwin for all their help with scenery and costumes, and to Mrs. Jacques for purchasing 3 bunny costumes. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A TUNNEL FOR OUR PLAY. If you have any collapsible laundry hampers or tube type thing that a couple of kids can crawl through, it would be greatly appreciated.
Holiday Giving Celebrations - Northpoint will be involved in two community service activities coordinated by Stars in Service this holiday season. Our class will be adopting a needy family in the PHM community and try to provide all the things they may need for a great Thanksgiving. In class, we will brainstorm and make a list of what a family might need and then assign specific items for your family to donate. Perishable food items such as a turkey, eggs, milk, butter, etc. cannot be stored so we would ask for a specific gift certificate to purchase those items from a local grocery store. Non-perishable items might include: cranberry sauce, jello, boxed mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, jar of gravy, brownies, paper products, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, centerpiece, etc. If your family has an excess of any of these items, please send them in next week prior to our brainstorming so we don't assign the item to a student. I will send home a note next week indicating what your child should bring to school so that a needy family will be able to have a THANKFUL THANKSGIVING. We will be collecting items the week of November 17th.

In December, our class will be doing something similar except that we will be adopting a needy family from the PHM community providing gifts/clothing/gift certificates/wrapping paper/etc. We will be doing this in lieu of bringing in Toys for Tots and winter clothing. We will be adopting a specific family and have a list of sizes, wants, interests, needs, etc.

Language Arts: Our basal story this week is On My Way to School. We will be focusing on beginning blends such as bl, cl, fl, pl, sl, gl; visualizing, retelling, sequencing, proper nouns (specifically days, months, holidays), and sight words: today, way, school, late, away, why. Our writing this week will focus on story writing about our families.
Math: Our math time was disrupted this week due to the election and other activities. Please check the daily schedule to see what we are studying according to the Homelink assigned. We will be focusing most of the week on Frames and Arrows and What's My Rule. We will also work on counting dimes. If your child needs extra help, let me know and I can give you several good websites or paper/pencil practice sheets. We will tentatively have a test over Unit 3 on the 18th.
DONATIONS NEEDED AND GLADLY ACCEPTED: kleenexes; strands of white lights (the ones with 10-20 lights on the strand) for a Christmas project; large refill size hand sanitizers. We will also need items for our December Mini-Economy store.
Earthquack - We are happy to announce that the Earthquack group will be performing the play on Wednesday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the LGI. Cast members are expected to be at school by 6:00 p.m. We will have dress rehearsals on Tuesday morning for the first grade classes and Wednesday morning for the 4th grade classes.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Donati and Mrs. Corwin for all their help with scenery and costumes, and to Mrs. Jacques for purchasing 3 bunny costumes. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A TUNNEL FOR OUR PLAY. If you have any collapsible laundry hampers or tube type thing that a couple of kids can crawl through, it would be greatly appreciated.
Holiday Giving Celebrations - Northpoint will be involved in two community service activities coordinated by Stars in Service this holiday season. Our class will be adopting a needy family in the PHM community and try to provide all the things they may need for a great Thanksgiving. In class, we will brainstorm and make a list of what a family might need and then assign specific items for your family to donate. Perishable food items such as a turkey, eggs, milk, butter, etc. cannot be stored so we would ask for a specific gift certificate to purchase those items from a local grocery store. Non-perishable items might include: cranberry sauce, jello, boxed mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, jar of gravy, brownies, paper products, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, centerpiece, etc. If your family has an excess of any of these items, please send them in next week prior to our brainstorming so we don't assign the item to a student. I will send home a note next week indicating what your child should bring to school so that a needy family will be able to have a THANKFUL THANKSGIVING. We will be collecting items the week of November 17th.

We did not get to lesson 3.8 in math. Homelink 3.8 should not be completed until tomorrow. We worked very hard on half-past the hour today. We also began brainstorming ideas for our family writing for November. Perhaps you can discuss family activities tonight at dinner. Please also go over your home address with your child. It is very important that they can recite and write their address.

FAMILY HOMEWORK
Family Homework is a GREAT way to get the family together and create a project.
We would like each family to create a project that represents your family. How do you do that? As a family, decide what kind of project you would like to create. Project ideas might be: a scrapbook page, a poster, family tree, a banner, a book, create a family crest, a mobile or any other CREATIVE idea you have. Then decide what information about your family you should include in your project. You might include: favorite activity your family does together, favorite holiday, something from your culture, members of your family, traditions your family has, something that is important to your family, history of your family, or anything else you would like to share with us about your family. If there is more than one Northpoint Star in your family, then you can either: create only one project, create "replicas" of the original project or create different projects for each Northpoint Star. Your family can make this as easy or as hard as they would like. If only one project will be created, that project should be turned in to the oldest sibling's classroom on the due date below.
In class, we will be doing a writing activity about why our family is special. We will focus on the writing skill of
organization/logical order. We will work on creating brilliant beginnings, mighty middles, and excellent endings. Each teacher will choose one student's writing from each class that shows the best use of a brilliant beginning, mighty middle and an excellent ending to put on display in the Writer's Showcase.

Animal Reports
Students chose an animal to complete a report on today. They need to find out where the animal lives, what it eats, and what it looks like. They will complete their first draft tomorrow and publish on Wednesday. You can help them at home by looking up the facts about their animals on the internet and sending them in and/or checking out a book about their animal from the public library. Discuss the details about their animals. The report will only be about 5-6 sentences long. A beginning sentence introducing their animals, 3 complete sentences about habit, food, appearance, and 1 closing sentence. They will also need to illustrate a picture of their animal.

Wear White Clothes on Wednesday for Red Ribbon Week
Tomorrow, your child will receive a pencil in honor of red ribbon week. We will also be going to the Planetarium at Bittersweet School tomorrow a.m. Homework tonight for math is Homelink 3.3
$700 was raised by the student council for the snow leopard adoption at Potowatami Zoo. On Friday, students are encouraged to bring in $1.00 and wear a pair of slippers to try to reach the $1,000 goal.

Yeah! Ellie Meade was the top seller in first grade. She will receive a certificate to choose any Northpoint Apparel, a yearbook, and appearance on STAR TV (that happened today) and an honorable mention in the PTO newsletter.

Students will be creating drug free posters in class (paper provided). Students need to "vote" on the best poster. There will only be ONE winner from each class -teachers you can vote too! The winning posters will be displayed throughout the lobby for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Each student will receive a "I ELECT TO BE DRUG FREE" sticker at school.

What can I do?
Research shows the best way to be a better reader is to READ! Not workbooks, or flashcards, which have their place, but the BEST way is to read. So snuggle up at bedtime and read aloud to them or take turns.
Which books should I choose?
The goal for choosing a book is one that is not too easy and not too hard. You want them to have a few things to figure out, but not have worked up a sweat by the end of the first page. A general rule is the ‘5 finger rule’: As your child reads a book, hold up a finger every time they come to a difficult word. If they reach 5 difficult words before the end of the page, the book is too hard. Also listen to the pace of their reading. It should be smooth with phrasing, not choppy, word-by-word calling. If a book is too hard for them to read themselves, read it to them!
"She just memorizes the books, and looks at the pictures…What should I do?"
Shout ‘hooray!’ Memorizing in the early levels is helpful because it helps them later when they have to hold chunks of information in their head as the sentences and concepts become more complex. Think of it as a stage. Pictures are part of the story. Pictures are your friends! Use them to learn more about the story.
Pointing to words is also helpful in the early levels. It is kind of like training wheels, when they don’t need it anymore, they can point only at the hard parts to help them focus on the word and break it into parts.
Beyond "Sound it Out"
The better way to say it is "Put the sounds together." It is clearer what they are supposed to do. Some other things to say:
"Say the first part and think about what would make sense. Check to see if you are right."

Monday Today we have P.E. Please wear tennis shoes to school. We will have spelling groups this week. Basals will be sent home this evening. Please have your child read A Prairie Dog Home Please make sure basal is sent back to school on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday Today we have music, bus safety presentation, and CLASS with Mrs. Slater.
Wednesday Today we have library and our visit to the Planetarium at Bittersweet Elementary.
Thursday Today we have music and computer lab. We will be going to Lab 22 for 20 minutes to practice math facts. Fund Raiser Delivery today.
Friday Today we have P.E. Please wear tennis shoes to school. We will have a selection assessment over A Prairie Dog Home. We will also have ART Smart today.

Language Arts: Our basal story this week is A Prairie Dog Home. We will be focusing on short o, summarizing, main idea, details, irregular plural nouns, and we will continue working on report writing.
Math: Home Link packets for Unit 3 have been sent home. Please read the parent letter to familiarize yourself with the concepts we will be learning. Home Links are to be completed at home. Homelink 3.1 today. You can also play before and after game at home using a regular deck of cards taking the queen, jack, and king out. Directions are being sent home. DIBELS reports also sent home today. We enjoyed Amazon John and his Silly Safari today.

We would not have this opportunity if parents didn't give of their resources and time. Thanks! Field Trip to Leininger Farms - Please make sure to have your child's permission slip and money turned in for our Friday, October 17th field trip. Your child will need to make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather that day. I would highly recommend your child wearing a rain poncho or rain coat because the corn mazes will be wet from the dew first thing in the morning. A few people still need to turn in their $2.00 for this field trip. If it is you, please do so as soon as possible.

Donations gladly accepted for the classroom.
Our classroom would gladly accept donations of kleenexes, hand sanitizer, old scraps of solid or winter fleece, and small strings of electric lights.
We took our first part of the NWEA Map Testing today. We are working on counting combinations of pennies and nickels. I sent home game sheets to play 6 rounds of penny/nickel grab with your child at home. This is a fun way to get practice with counting coins. I also sent home a form from Highlights magazine. If you could please sign it and return as soon as possible, we can get free materials for the classroom. You do not have to buy anything... but it needs to be signed.
Mrs. Slater visited our class today and talked about cooperation and safety with the class.
Please send a coat with your child each day. We have a rule that if it is < 60 degrees, the children have to wear their coats outside. Thanks for your support on this .

Scholastic Book Orders/NWEA MAP Testing
November Scholastic Orders were sent home today. Don't forget you can order online and pay with credit card. If you want to pay with check, fill out the order forms and return to me by October 17th.
NWEA Primary Map testing has begun. Today, your child took a practice test. Tuesday through Friday will be the real deal. Please make sure to help your child do his/her best by making sure they get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast. We will begin our testing first thing in the morning.
Although we don't have spelling lists for this week because of testing, we will be working on short o and a few sight words. Your child wrote the words that he/she needs to study for this week in their planner. We will be taking a test on Friday for sentence dictation and spelling using this weeks words.
We read Animal Moms and Dads in our basals today. Please make sure your child returns his/her basal tomorrow.
If you have not turned in your child's permission slip or $2.00 for our field trip to Leininger Farms on October 17, please do so as soon as possible.
Your child also added a list of sight words (trick words) for Unit 2 of our reading series in their binders. It is in a page protector and needs to stay in their binders.

WANTED - We have a wonderful CD of music performed by former Northpoint students with Randy Beard regarding the life skills. It is wonderful, and we listen to it all the time in the classroom. I was wandering how many might be interested in getting a copy for home use???? Then.... I would need someone who was willing to burn them for each person who brings in a blank CD. Any takers?????
ALSO... If your child is involved in Earthquack, we are in need of volunteers to help with a few costumes and scenery. We would greatly appreciate any help. We don't have a date yet for the performance because the kids are still learning their lines and we don't have costumes or scenery. We will let you know as soon as we know.

No Child Left Inside
Tomorrow we will be celebrating No Child Left Inside with the students of Northpoint Elementary. We will be spending most of the day outside. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately.
